Jack Nicholson offered Jackie Robinson biopic '42'

Jack Nicholson offered Jackie Robinson biopic '42'

The dramatic, inspirational story of Jackie Robinson, Major League Baseball’s first black player, seems so ripe for a Hollywood adaptation that it’s a little surprising we haven’t seen the story hit the big screen in some time. Filmmakers have certainly tried — Spike Lee had a biopic in the works at one point, and Robert Redford tried for years to get his own version going — but for whatever reason, those projects never panned out.

Happily, the iconic sports star and civil rights hero may finally be getting his day in the sun. Earlier this year, Legendary Pictures announced an official biopic to be directed by Brian Helgeland for release by Warner Bros., and now it seems casting on the picture has slowly begun.

While we still have no idea who’ll play Robinson, a new report has surfaced saying that Jack Nicholson has been offered a part in the film. Vulture broke the story earlier today, via information from their “spies.” The exact nature of Nicholson’s possible role has yet to be revealed, but one plausible guess is that he’d be playing Dodgers exec Branch Rickey. Rickey played a key role in breaking baseball’s color barrier by signing Robinson to the Montreal Royals (the Dodgers’ minor league affiliate) and then bringing him up to the big leagues in 1947.

Robinson would’ve been considered a remarkable player under any circumstance, but it’s the incredible courage he showed in becoming MLB’s first black player — enduring hateful taunts, unnecessary roughness from other players, and even death threats — that elevates him to the status of great American hero. I’d imagine that his moving story would translate splendidly to film, provided that Helgeland is able to do it justice.

The Warner Bros. picture is being developed in collaboration with the late Robinson’s estate and his widow Rachel. Helgeland will also write the story, which focuses on Robinson and his legacy; as we reported this summer, this seems to be a different take from the more Rickey-centric one that Helgeland had been developing with Redford previously. In that incarnation, Redford was attached to play Rickey, but doesn’t seem to be associated with the film any longer.

Nicholson has yet to make a decision on the offer, so we don’t know for sure that he’ll be starring in it. Still, the apparent fact that the project is actively casting seems like an auspicious indication that this version of the Robinson tale could actually get off the ground.

Jack Nicholson Hollywood home damaged by fire

Jack Nicholson Hollywood home damaged by fire

A blaze badly damaged a home in the Hollywood Hills, injuring two firefighters. Property records show that the house, located in the 7300 block of Woodrow Wilson Drive, is owned by actor Jack Nicholson. Nicholson hasn't lived in the house since 1975 and has been renting out the property.

The fire broke out around 8 p.m. About 85 firefighters from the L.A. City Fire Department were called to the scene. They had the flames under control by around 9:30 p.m. The house is completely gutted, but according to officials it could have been much worse due to the narrow streets and the homes being close together.

Luckily the fire did not spread. Two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion and were taken to a local hospital for observation. Firefighters say the person who lives in the home believes chemicals in the garage may have started the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Authorities say it appears to be accidental.

Jack Nicholson not happy with Anjelica Huston memoir

Jack Nicholson not happy with Anjelica Huston memoir

Jack Nicholson is reportedly trying to stop his ex-girlfriend Anjelica Huston from lifting the lid on their relationship and his behaviour in her upcoming memoir.

The Hollywood legend dated the actress for 16 years and is reportedly worried about what details she could include in her book about their romance and his wild behaviour. A source told National Enquirer magazine: "Jack has a lot of skeletons in his closet and Anjelica knows where most of the bodies are buried. She not only knows about many of Jack's women, she also has the goods on his drug use, drinking and kinky sex!"

Jack, 74, even gave Anjelica a diamond and ruby necklace for her 60th birthday when he attended her party in Venice, California, earlier this month in a bid to win her over. The source added: "Jack kissed Anjelica and said, 'It's just like old times sweetheart, isn't it?' Anjelica was swept off her feet at first, but she's wise to Jack's little game. He's trying to buy her silence."

The 'As Good As It Gets' star is notorious for his womanising ways and has dated a string of beauties over the years, including Lara Flynn Boyle and Michelle Phillips. But he has previously admitted the 'Horrid Henry: The Movie' actress was the love of his life, and he regrets cheating on her with Rebecca Broussard - with whom he fathered two children with.

Jack said: "The reality was that I was annihilated emotionally by the separation from Anjelica. That was probably the toughest period of my life. I may have made a mistake but I don't want to go back and correct it. I would rather deal with it."

Anjelica's book is due to be released in 2013.
